I started 381 (Reading) Sqn on the 21st June 2006 and got enrolled on the 30th October 2006. So far I have done things I've never dreamt of doing: I've been flying; gliding; passed my weapons handling test - so I'm now able to go onto a range and target shoot.

I have also done netball, 5 a side football, cross country, canoeing and broom balling with the cadets. I enjoyed these very much and I am looking forward to going camping and flying again.

I would recommend Air Cadets to anyone aged between 13-18 years old.

Cpl Richard Thompson

Hi, I'm Cpl Thompson, known to many as "Thomo". I'm 16, I've been a cadet for 2 1/2 years and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I've done a number of activities over the years such as flying; gliding; exercises and summer camp at RAF Henlow. I've made loads of new friends over my time in the ATC, whom I've kept in touch with. I've also earned qualifications that will stay with me for life, such as my VHF/UHF radio operators licence, and I'm hoping to do a gliding scholarship. This means I get a licence to fly before I can even start driving!

The ATC is divided into Regions and Wings. Our Wing is Thames Valley and I've represented the Wing for rugby twice, and captained the team on my last year at junior level. Now I'm 16, I will be going into the senior team - which should be great fun. Rugby is my passion, so I was really chuffed that I was given the role of captain of the junior team and then get selected to play for South West Region. This is as high as you can go at junior level as they don't select juniors for the national team. If I play at my peak next year I hope to make it to national level. Who knows, I might even make it to captain the Wing, Region and Corps rugby team - that would make my day!

There's a lot I can still do in the ATC and I intend on doing them - things like a parachute course and skiing. Looking back on my time in the ATC so far I'm glad I joined and can't wait for things to unfold.

Cpl Ben Uzzell

Most looking forward to in the ATC is the scholarships on offer. There's flying and gliding and loads of other courses. Also, I can't wait until I can go on the Parachute course; it sounds awesome!!

The ATC has lots to offer, and I plan to do as much as I can! Basically, I'm looking forward to anything the ATC throws at me!!!

Cdt Tom Mundy

My name is Thomas Mundy and I'm a cadet at 381 (Reading) Squadron. I joined Reading Air Cadets in about June 2006 to get an experience of the RAF, and to see what the RAF has to offer.

I have participated in the Wing Challenge and I have also been on an activity week in Llanbedr, Wales. In the future I hope to see Badminton added as a sport within Cadets and I look forward to other camps that the ATC offers.

Cdt Stuart Williams

Hi, my name is Stuart Williams and I'm a cadet at 381. I've been at Reading Air Cadets since October 2005 and I joined to get an experience of the RAF.

So far I have been on outdoor exercises, a radio course, flying, represented Thames Valley Wing at cross-country and lots of other things. I hope to do lots more things with the Air Cadets.

How did we hear about Air Cadets?

We heard about Air Cadets through friends and the Squadron Warrant Officer. We joined 381 because we knew people who went there and they said it was fun.

Why did we join?

We joined the ATC because it looked fun and different from anything we had done before. It also allows cadets to do activities that you would not find anywhere else. We enrolled on the 28th October 2006.

What have we done so far in cadets?

We participated in a parade through Oxford to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Air Training Corps and 25 years of Thames Valley Wing. We also participated in the Remembrance parade held at Brock Barracks.

At the end of 2006 we attended the trials for the Wing netball team. This consisted of a day at an RAF station learning skills and playing lots of games of netball. We both managed to be picked for the team as well as Cdt Smyth who also tried out. We are all looking forward to playing this year as part of the Thames Valley Wing team.

In January we passed our weapons handling test which means we can now go onto the shooting range and fire a No. 8 rifle.

We went to the bowling competition again the other Squadrons in Thames Valley Wing. It was great fun and we are looking forward to more competitions like this.

On our last night at ATC before Christmas we went broomballing, which was a great laugh. Broomballing is when you go onto an ice rink wearing your trainers and you have a stick with a plastic triangle shape bit on the bottom which you use to hit the soft ball into the net. It was a brilliant end to the year.

What are we looking forward to?

We are both looking forward to going on camp and getting the chance to fly in a powered aircraft and a glider, also to do more events like the bowling and maybe even one day get promoted.
